This is Sunshine! Sunshine is a Goffin Cockatoo . She is currently being rehabilaitated for being a self mutilator. Sunshine is a permanent resident and is NOT up for adoption.
Occasionally, we are fortunate enough to offer a temporary home to birds looking for a new forever home. We are not here to judge you for the reasons you canot keep your pet, our main concern is for the pet and finding him/her the best possible new home. If you can no longer keep your pet please call us at 301-741-8223 or send an email. If we are unable to help you and your pet at the time we will assist you in finding another rescue that will. Please under no circumstance ever release a parrot/pet bird outdoors. They are not native species and will not survive. Thank you
Adoption Fees:
Small birds- Canaries, Finches & Parakeets $
Cockatiels, Lovebirds and Eng.Budgies $
Parrotlets - $
Conures, Quakers and other small parrots- $
** Adoption fees are subject to change without notice
Please Note:
At this time we are not adopting our large species parrots. We have found that most we have taken are un-adoptable because of behavioral issues and are not suitable in a pet home. These animals have a permanent home here with us. Any relinquished parrot that is requested to NOT be adopted/re-homed will also have a permanent home here.
Parrots are wild animals. They can inflict devastating injuries from bites. Radar’s Roost is not responsible for any injuries or damages that any and/or all adopted birds may inflict on the Adoptee, family and friends of the Adoptee, and/or anyone that may have contact with the adopted animal. Radar’s Roost is not responsible for any injuries/ damages that may occur at our facility as a result of an attempt to handle any/all bird(s). Please do not stick fingers or any objects in any cages. Please do not allow your children to attempt to touch, handle, pick-up, stick fingers/objects in cages. We do our best to evaluate each parrot and obtain a full history on each animal, but please remember they are wild animals.
Policies and Procedures:
Age requirement: You MUST be 21 years old to adopt from us. We do not allow our pets to be adopted and given as gifts… no exceptions. The Adoptee must fill out and sign a Radar’s Roost Adoption Contract and the adoption fee must be paid for in full prior to the pet leaving our facility.
We require that you provide us with the information on your Avian Veterinarian prior to the finalization of the adoption. If you need assistance finding one let us know we can assist you.
We require that you own your home if adopting one of our pets. Birds can be quite noisy and landlords and neighbors may complain. Some apartment/condo communities do not allow birds, so this policy is in place to protect the pet.
We DO NOT adopt our pets into a home where a smoker resides…no exceptions. Parrots have very complex respiratory systems and second hand smoke can have devastating effects.
We ask that you do as much research as possible on the species of parrot you are interested in so you have a basic knowledge of care, feeding and behavioral traits of the pet you are interested in adopting.
It is the discretion of this rescue to do a home inspection. If it is requested by this rescue and refused by the Adoptee the pet will NOT be adopted.
We do not allow our pets to be bred or place them with people whom are considering breeding them. We only adopt our animal into homes that are looking for a pet. If we adopt out a bird to you and find out later you are breeding it, we will require you to relinquish the animal back to our rescue and there may be civil fines involved. We reserve the right to check up on the animal anytime to ensure it is still in the possession of the Adoptee and being properly cared for.
Any information given on the adoption application will be looked into. Please make sure you answer it fully and honestly. Any false information given on an application will be grounds for rejection and/or relinquishment of the adopted pet.
If an adopted pet needs to be re-homed the Adoptee MUST contact this rescue to return the pet at no cost to this rescue. If there is another suitable home related to the Adoptee, the decision to transfer homes of the pet MUST be discussed with this rescue PRIOR to re-homing the pet and the new Adoptee MUST fill out and sign a Radar’s Roost Adoption Contract. It is expected that upon returning the pet he/she will be in the same health and physical condition as when it was adopted from this rescue. Upon return to this rescue the pet is found to be in need of Veterinary care the Adoptee will be responsible for all costs involved with the care.
We do not charge to relinquish your bird, however we do ask that you fill out a questionnaire about your pet so we can find him/her the best possible home and make his/her stay with us as comfortable as possible. We ask that you be as honest about your parrot's behaviors as possible. For example: please don’t tell us that he/she is great with children and has never bitten anyone and we find out otherwise. That will not do us any good in finding your bird an appropriate home. Please be honest about ALL behaviors good and bad.
We ask upon relinquishment that you please provide us with your pet’s cage, toys and diet that he/she is accustomed to eating. Even if the cage is not “pretty” as long as it is functional and will contain your pet thru his/her transitional period. A familiar cage or toy will help lessen the stress of the move to a new home.
It is very expensive to care for all our birds. 100% of all adoption fees will go to pay for fresh foods, pellets, parrot seed, toys, cages and Veterinary Care.
We will do pick-ups anywhere in the Wash-Metro Area and if needed will drive a reasonable distance. Call 301-741-8223 to see if you are in our area. If we cannot assist you we can refer you to another rescue in your area that may be able too. Please under NO circumstances ever release a parrot into the outdoors. They are not native species and as such will not survive.
We have paid small fees to get animals out of bad situations, but this is not the common practice. Please do not call us looking to “sell” your bird because that is not what we are here for.
Any/all animals relinquished to Radar’s Roost become sole property of Radar’s Roost.
